PSYC 3190 RESEARCH ABSTRACT Names of group members: Anja Wieck, Nathan Lynn, Vincent Jones Phenomenon & Theory: Briefly describe the general question or topic area that you wish to pursue for your project: We are looking to explore the relationship between mental effort and memory. In particular, we’re looking to see the effects of mental tasks on memory-recall results, and the difference in effects on recall of words from either an alphabetic versus random-order list of words. Hypothesis: State explicitly the hypothesis(es) you plan to test: • Our first hypothesis (H ) is that a more difficult mental task will reduce scores on a memory 1 test. • Our null hypothesis (H ) is that the difficulty of the mental task will have no difference in 0 memory. • Our second hypothesis (H ) suggests that the subjects will have a higher rate of recall if the 2 words are presented in alphabetical order. • The corresponding null hypothesis is that there will be no difference between the results of random-order versus alphabetical order. Methods: Identify the variables and the general methods used to collect the data. State why you think the variables will be related to the hypothesis in the specified manner. The participants for this study will consist of the students in the Psychology 3190 course at Thompson Rivers University. They will participate in a between-subjects experiment, a 2 x 2 ANOVA design. Our first independent variable is the difficulty of the maze: moderate or impossible. Our second variable is the order of presentation of the words to be memorized: randomized or alphabetized. The dependent variable measured is memory, operationalized as the results of memory-recall test, (i.e. items presented before maze that are correctly recalled). Subjects will be randomly assigned to one of four groups. The first group will receive an alphabetical collection of words to recall, and are given a simple maze to complete. The second group…
