Operating room time-wasted is defined as the time in which the scheduled OR was not busy with the scheduled patient amounts to 15% of total time wasted owing to inappropriately prepared patients (12%), unavailability of surgeons (7%), insufficient staffing, anesthesiologists, or OR assignments (59%), delay in transport to the OR (2%), frequent occurrence of surgical cases running longer than their scheduled time, outrunning the staffing after 3:00 PM and delays with add-on procedures, adding 33% to inefficiency (Weinbroum, Ekstein & Ezri, 2002). Continuous surveillance on OR promptness and wise staff assignments could maximize OR efficiency.

Objectives

Identify etiology of OR inefficiency based on analyzed data measuring causes of scheduling inefficiencies and delays yielding strategies to improve efficiency.

Develop a strategic plan for a process improvement approach toaddress the lack of efficiencyusing evidence based literatureintegrating Six Sigma methodology.

Develop an education plan and staff competencies identifying awareness training, personal accountability and team work based on evidence-based best practices.
