Write an essay in which you respond to the question, “What is the meaning of life?”
The options, as you already know (or will know, from our in-class discussions), are questioning the question, pessimism, religious, secular-humanism, and existentialism. If you can think of a sixth one, please identify it in your response! I expect that you will discuss two of the possibilities, including your thoughts on their weaknesses, their strengths, and which of them appeals to you more. (I assume you might pick your favorite of the six options as one of your two for discussion, but you need not.)
Please also explain, very briefly, why you reject the other options. You should understand that, by its very nature, this question calls forth personal thoughts. Your papers will not be published or displayed to anyone. Your professor will be the only observer. (If you do not want to write your personal thoughts, then simply write as if you are writing “personal thoughts”—but, one way or another, include reasons for what you write.)
In your essay, you might consider what the word “meaning” means here—does it describe a value that you ascribe to your own life, or that you adopt as a sort of goal? . . . or does it describe the point of your life, when it is assessed near the end of your life? . . . or does it refer to something that explains why humans exist at all . . . or does it mean that each individual has been assigned (by whom? . . . or by what?) a meaning that might (or might not!) be specially made for that individual (and, if so, how do we find out about it?)?
