HLSC 220: Public Health – Health care Assignment Help

Jess and I as the negative team do not believe in the legalisation of immunisations. The laws in Australia are put in place to assure this countries citizen’s safety and to keep this country fair and just. By forcing parents into immunising their children we are taking away the right for those families to live a fair and just life in Australia. We, as future health care professions in training, do not think that this law is neither fair nor just towards us. It will be the health care professionals who will be administering the vaccines to unwilling children and their unwilling parents. From the start we have been drilled into us that consent from the patient, or their parents in the case of a minor, is essential to undertake any sort of procedure. Without that consent it is unethical to proceed with the procedure, no matter how important it may be. By making it law to have immunisations, these young patients and their parents are been forced into the decision to immunise their child, taking away their right to deny the health care available to them. As Jess covered before me, every Australian has the right to freedom of choice and the right to access education. By enforcing such a law that no child can attend childcare without immunisations, the government is taking both the
freedom of choice and right to access education away from them.

Immunisations can be traumatizing to everyone involved in the procedure, including not only the child, but the parents and the health care professionals. In the journal article, ‘Conquering Pain: The Hidden Cost of Immunization’, Dr Anna Toddio describes immunisations as a ‘major source of distress for children (of all ages), their parents, and the participating health care professionals’. The process of immunising children exposes children to unnecessary pain and suffering and can have long term effects, such as a fear of needles. If being stabbed a sharp object isn’t traumatising enough, then been held down, by people you love like your parents, while you are kicking and screaming can have lasting effects on not only the child but the parents who are also been forced into inflicting such pain. Been the health care professional administering the needle that is causing the child so much distress and pain can have dire effects on mental health of the professional. By creating a law that forces parents to put their child in line to be stabbed, is also forcing health care professionals to perform procedures they may not be comfortable doing.

I personally have working in the health care industry for a few years now and have been exposed to the aggression and rude behaviour that consumers can inflict on those who are simply following the new protocols instilled by the government. Having worked in a pharmacy for 5 years, I have been yelled at and been made to feel horrible by consumers who are unhappy with the
governments decisions to up medication prices or remove certain medications from the pharmaceuticals benefit scheme. This is the result of consumers taking their anger at the government out on those who are simply doing their jobs under the government’s new policies. By creating the law to have vaccinations for children compulsory, I fear that those administering these
said vaccinations will be subjected to ridicule and abuse.

Herd immunity in relation to the ‘unvaccinated occurs when a sufficient proportion of the group is immune’ according to the world health organisation. This means that with the current number of people vaccinating voluntarily, those who are not vaccinated are not as high as a threat because there is a high number of people in the group who are immunised reducing the incidence of disease. This therefore eliminates the reasoning of enforcing the law.

In conclusion the negative side are against the government’s decision to create a law causingvaccinations of children to be compulsory. It is taking away the Australians freedom of choice and their right to an education. It is also places the health care professionals in a position that they may not be comfortable with causing them distress. Immunising a child can also cause a considerable amount of distress on the patient and the parents and can have long lasting effects. By forcing the country to be in admission to vaccinations is creating a negative view towards the government and

the way they make the laws without the consideration of the consequences. Would you like to be forced into making your children do something you don’t agree with so they can earn an education?
