Important Note
The marks allocated for each question do not necessarily reflect the number of words required to answer the question. For example, some questions worth 2 or 3 marks can be answered in a few words, though others might require one or two sentences. If you are struggling to stay within the word count it is recommended that, if it is possible to answer a question in a few words, you do so in order to save words for those questions that require more text to answer. For brief answers, the following format is acceptable: Q. 5 (i): Random sampling.

TASK A—Qualitative Research
Using the skills you developed in Topic 2, locate the journal article referenced below. Read the article carefully before answering Questions 1–2.

Stanton, J & Randal, P 2011, ‘Doctors accessing mental-health services: an exploratory
study’, BMJ Open, vol. 1, no. 17, doi:10.1136/bmjopen-2010-000017.

Q. 1.
(i) Identify the study design used in this study. (1 mark)
(ii) Identify the type of sampling described in this study.

Q. 2.
Please refer to the results section of the study which outlines 8 qualitative themes across which responses of participants are categorised i.e. coded. Imagine you are a health researcher and are responsible for coding some of the data collected. For each of the following statements please identify which of the 8 themes the statement most appropriately fits into:
(i) “I am a doctor, I cannot be seen as having a weakness.”
(ii) “Almost a year had passed before I looked for help.”
(iii) “I thought it was just a rough patch that would eventually pass.”
(iv) “There is no way I could ever expect to get promoted at work in the future if any of my colleagues found out I wasn’t coping with things last year.”

TASK B—Quantitative Research
Using the skills you developed in Topic 2, locate the journal article referenced below. Note that you do not need to read the entire article, only those sections mentioned in Questions 3–8.

Beyondblue 2013, National mental health survey of doctors and medical students, retrieved 6 November 2017, .

Q. 3.
(i) Read the introduction and methodology of the report. The description indicates that a cross- sectional study was used in this instance. Name an appropriate and more rigorous study design which could have been used to investigate the mental health of doctors. (2 marks)

(ii) Briefly explain one advantage and one disadvantage of using the study design you suggested for Question 3(i).

Q. 4.
Observe the data in Table 11 ‘Doctors ever diagnosed with depression’ (Beyondblue 2013, p. 25). Which scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio) was used to present each of the following types of data in the table:
(i) Age group.
(ii) Specialty.
(iii) Imagine the researchers had also asked the following open ended question to the doctors:

“How many times have you taken leave from work due to work related stress?” What scale of measurement best aligns with the data that would be collected by this question?

(iv) If the data collected for the open ended question for Question 4 (iii) was later grouped into categories from the ‘least frequent’ to the ‘most frequent’ experiences of high stress. What scale of measurement best aligns with the grouped data?

Q. 5.
This question relates to confidence intervals and means. Based on the data in Table 11 ‘Doctors ever diagnosed with depression’:
(i) Identify the “work area” which had the largest proportion of doctors to have been diagnosed with depression and the “work area” which has the smallest proportion of doctors to have been diagnosed with depression. Use the appropriate data (figures) from the table to back up your answer. (3 marks)

(ii) Identify the 95% confidence intervals for each of the “work areas” specified for Question 5(i).
(iii) Judging by the confidence intervals identified for Question 5(ii), is this difference in the rates of doctors ever diagnosed with depression for the two respective “work areas” statistically significant? In your answer briefly explain what statistical significance means in this context of doctors who have ever been diagnosed with depression. Explanations must be backed up by discussing the confidence interval figures from Question 5(ii).

Q. 6.
This question relates to confidence intervals and means. Based on the data in Table 12 ‘Doctors currently diagnosed with depression’:
(i) Identify the rate of doctors with an overseas degree currently diagnosed with depression.
(ii) Identify the rate of doctors with a non-overseas degree currently diagnosed with depression.
(iii) Is the difference in diagnosis rates of doctors with the different degree types identified in Question 6(i) and (ii) statistically significant? Explain your answer by demonstrating your understanding what we have learned about statistical significance, confidence intervals and means in HBS108. Answers must include the appropriate figures from Table 12. (4 marks)

Q. 7.
This question relates to confidence intervals and odds ratios. Based on the data in Table 47 ‘Factors associated with high or very high psychological distress in doctors’, answer the following questions:

(i) What is the odds ratio for doctors who are ‘separated/divorced’ suffering high or very high psychological distress?
(ii) What is the odds ratio for doctors who are ‘widowed’ suffering high or very high psychological distress? (1 mark)
(iii) Demonstrate your understanding of what odds ratios can tell us about a study sample by discussing the following doctor groups: ‘committed relationship/married’, ‘separated/divorced’ and ‘widowed’. What do their odds ratios tell us about their risk of experiencing high or very high psychological distress? (5 marks)
(iv) Is this difference in risk that was found in the sample participants (denoted by the odds ratios) between the ‘widowed’ doctors and the ‘separated/divorced’ doctors group statistically significant? In your answer briefly explain what statistical significance means in this context of experiencing high or very high psychological distress. Answers must be backed up with reference to the confidence interval figures from Table 47. (4 marks)

Q. 8.
Identify the type of distribution represented by:
(i) Figure A1 (Beyondblue 2013, p. 139).
(ii) Figure A2 (Beyondblue 2013, p. 140).

Q. 9.
Imagine you are a health promotion officer and you need to design one evidence based intervention with the aim of improving mental health in the workplace. You will focus on Australian schools as a workplace setting. You must use the skills you developed in HBS108 to source an appropriate study (i.e., a peer-reviewed journal article) which is relevant to improving the mental health of teachers. The study must provide evidence-based suggestions for interventions to improve the mental health of teachers.

(i) Provide the full citation of the most relevant credible article you have sourced and selected. Copy and paste the abstract of the article into your assignment as an appendix (this will not count towards your word count). (6 marks)

(ii) Describe your health promotion intervention to improve the mental health of teachers. Justify your intervention design by backing it up with the research findings and conclusions of the article you have sourced. You must demonstrate clearly how your suggested intervention incorporates the evidence from the sourced study into its design.

(ii) Find an online job advertisement related to the career you described for Question 10 (i) and copy and paste at least two of the selection criteria from the job advertisement which relate to your learning in HBS108. (Note: the selection criteria do not count towards your assignment word count). Also include a web link or full publishing details for the advertisement in your answer. (2 marks)
