Active Listening – This is all about being attentive to the disclosure being shared. Active listening is a combination of paraphrasing, reframing, clarifying, perception checking and providing empathy, which builds trust. Obviously, if you spot any of these, what you are observing is active listening.
Paraphrase – It is a microskill that restates the message of the client that allows you both to get closer to the point and clarifies what is being said. By paraphrasing, the therapist is testing his understanding of what he heard so as to determine whether or not the listener has truly understood the speaker. An example:
