In any crisis situation, it is expected that a person is in a state of hopelessness. One example of a crisis situation is that of suicide, or Suicide ideation (considering the act). Studies show that suicide is an egregious psychiatric outcome. It leads to factors such as: (a) the irreversible loss of life for families, (b) loved ones and (c) society (Feinstein, Givacchini, & Miller, 1971). Even more of a problem associated with suicide is the difficulty in predicting suicidal behavior. As McAdams, &Keener (2008) point out, client suicide studies have called attention to the need for significant responses before during and after a crisis (p. 389). With this form of a response, other studies show that for all crisis survivors, there can be a reduction in crises. For instance, the reduction in crisis frequency and intensity have been reported when there are adequate response to a crisis (Dimeff & Koerner, 2007).According to Feinstein et al (1971), one of the most critical suicidal psychiatric syndromes are personality disorders.
For instance, to manage crisis situations for persons with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), an interdisciplinary model was adopted (Feinstein et al., 1971). The formal diagnostic definition given for BPD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR [APA], 2000) is that it is a “pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image and affects, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of content (p. 710). Reports show that 97% of persons wish BPD have received outpatient treatment, and another 72% have had at least one psychiatric hospitalization.
