The narratives surrounding the life of Siddhartha Gautama include his experience of four sights, in which he contemplated disease, old age, and death. The final sight in the narrative is of a meditating Buddhist monk. These sights led to the best summary of Buddhist doctrine, known as the Four Noble Truths: 1) life is suffering; 2) suffering is caused by craving or grasping; 3) suffering ceases with the extinction (nirvana) of craving or grasping; and 4) craving or grasping can be extinguished by following the Eightfold Path. Gerald McDermott (2000) has described the diversity of Buddhism by noting the following: Mahayana Buddhists, for example, worship many deities, while Theravadin Buddhists are atheists, for all practical purposes. Theravadins and practitioners of Zen say we must rely on self-effort to get us to our spiritual goals, whereas Tibetan Buddhists and Mahayanists believe we can ask for grace from a Buddha or bodhisattva. Theravadins and Zennists tell us our final destination should be a nirvana in which there are no ideas, beings or consciousness. But devotees of the numerous Mahayana sects look forward to pure lands and paradises in which they will enjoy personal communion with their deities.
