Chapter 14.1 Substance Abuse and Addiction – Discussion group 4

Now that you are somewhat familiar with the way that the nervous system works on a molecular level you are ready to learn about the biological reasons that some drugs are more addictive or likely to be abused. Your knowledge of this section will be assessed using assignments instead of a quiz. To introduce this topic first view some videos online produced by HBO with the National Institute of Health (Drug Abuse division). I was not able to embed them here so I will provide the links to them. You need adobe flash player plugin for them to work. Together they are about 20 minutes. NIDA Logo.jpgHBOlogo.jpeg These links are only working on computers but not on moble devices like tablets. I am not sure why but you will need to use a computer to view them. Chapter 2 of What is Addiction?http://www.hbo.com/addiction/thefilm/supplemental/6212_what_is_addiction.htmlLinks to an external site. Here is a youtube video with one of the speakers from the film in case you have trouble viewing the one above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnd2-al4LCU (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. e The Science of Relapse http://www.hbo.com/addiction/thefilm/centerpiece/614_segment_3.htmlLinks to an external site. I hope those videos helped to highlight the importance of understanding the biological basis of behaviors. I also hope that now you know which neurotransmitter is involved in addiction and have a general idea of what is happening in the brain when someone is addicted. Read about that in more detail in your textbook now in Module 14.1 (Module 3.3 in the 11th edition). Make sure you can answer the following questions (post your answer to at least one of them, for me to grade): 1. Which areas of the brain are involved in addiction and are affected by most drugs of abuse? Which neurotransmitter seems to be more involved? 2. What happens in the brain that causes tolerance of a drug to occur? 3. What happens in the brain that makes cravings difficult to ignore and quitting difficult? 4. How has knowledge of the biological mechanisms of addiction led to treatments?
