The challenges to solution based therapy in adolescent teens are numerous. The most common challenges are developing rapport, gaining information, and avoidance of therapeutic repetition or repeating therapy which the client does not react to. In surmounting the rapport issue one can use “humor and surprise” which has been clinically proven to help adolescents. The advantage is that it lowers the boundaries between therapist and client, it makes the particular problem (i.e. drug abuse) seem fixable and it creates various possible solutions. This type of therapy is especially effective when dealing with teens that have social adjustment issues as well as authority issues.
