Neurodevelopmental disorders and elimination disorders are usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence. Additional diagnoses often made earlier in development are disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders. On the other hand, diagnoses such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders typically start in early adulthood and are usually chronic. It is important to note, however, that all of the categories of disorders result in some level of functional impairment in the individuals diagnosed. Understanding the criteria, as well as the similarities and differences among disorders, is an important component of the diagnostic process.
