Nursing Theory
A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is that of Betty Neuman, Neuman’s
Systems Model (NMS). Neuman’s System Model concentrates on primary care and prevention.
The nursing theory also believes in treating individuals’ mind, body, and spirit, whole-person
care (AHU, 2018). Nurses apply Neuman’s System Model to implement excellence in nursing by
realizing a patient is more than just the disease, illness, or room number. Nurses can care for a
patient with holistic care by reducing stressors that may be contributing to their illness or
situation when NMS is utilized. NMS fits my professional practice because I work for an
organization that believes in whole-person care, and we strive to focus not only on acute care but
also on being present in the community supporting prevention and primary care as the first
defense
Historical Figures
Two historic individuals in nursing are Clara Harlowe Barton, who founded the American
Red Cross in 1904, and Dorothea Dix, who was a lobbyist for mental health and opened the first
mental health institution in 1861. Clara Barton, an employee of the United States government
during the beginning of the Civil War, saw a need for someone to help out the soldiers during
this time. She endangered her life to make sure that soldiers were cared for with medical
supplies and nursing care when injured or sick (American Red Cross, n.d.). Dorothea Dix,

having dealt with her physical illnesses which affected her mental health, saw the need to have
dedicated facilities to address the mental health aspects in individuals. Dorothea went on to open
over 30 mental institutions. She disputed the idea that the mentally ill could not get better as
well as combating cruel practices for the mentally ill (Parry, 2006).
Historically, nursing has had many contributions by individuals, but two that have influenced
my nursing practice are that of Clara Harlowe Barton and Dorothea Dix. Clara was a pioneer for
volunteer services, and she has influenced my nursing practice and desire to volunteer in my
community and help those who may not be able to help themselves. Dorothea was an advocate
for treating mental health along with physical health. Her ideals influence my nursing practice. I
understand that individuals also need their mental health addressed to heal physically. Dorothea
has also influenced my ability to recognize a mentally ill patient can recover with proper
treatment.
State Board of Nursing and the American Nurses Association (ANA)
The role of the State Board of Nursing is to govern the standards for care, licensing
requirements, and the scope of practice for nurses within the state they preside over (Mee et al.,
2020). The role of the American Nurses Association, an organization that has voluntary
members, is that it dictates the Standards for Nursing Practice at a high level and provides input
on exams for licensure. The American Nurses Association also is responsible for upholding safe
working conditions for nurses. The functional differences between the State Board of Nursing
and the American Nurses Association are the State Board of Nursing upholds the profession
through licensure as well as consequences for wrongdoing and the American Nurses Association
is an organization that nurses join voluntarily but are provided support by the professional
