As soon as she arrived, the medical team ran tests on her which included an EKG showing that she had suffered a heart attack. She also has a history of pulmonary disease and is diabetic.
The ER physician and medical team discovered that she did not have an advanced directive on file. There is also a language barrier because Jamilah is from Turkey and only knows very little English. Although she and her family moved to the United States more than 40 years ago, there still seems to be communication difficulties for her.
It is not clear in the scenario that Jamilah was coherent at the time she was brought to the ER. But, it is assumed she is not coherent because she was found collapsed at her bedside and when she was brought in, the medical staff immediately contacted her next of kin due to the fact that she was unable to make her own medical decisions.
When her family, which consisted of her three sons, arrived to the hospital, the medial team learned that in Turkish culture, the men were the patriarchs for the family and would make her medical decisions if she was unable to. Her son Bashir informed the hospital that he would be the final decision maker when it came to his mother’s medical care.
