A. The ground rules
We’ve talked about these in class, on a number of times, but here they are again. The assignment is for you to write an essay on the following topic. (See Part C, below)
This essay is not a research paper, but, rather, one asking you to contemplate the writing that is the subject of the assignment (it’s in Part C, below), and then to write about—to discuss!—the thoughts and question(s) it raises for you, personally. Thus, there is no objectively correct responsive essay. Rather, the idea here is for you to explore your subjective positions on the subject, the question(s) that, as a result, arise for you, and then to write about your position(s)—about your thoughts—in a cogent, well-organized, well-thought-out paper. I am not a great stickler over grammar or spelling, although I expect your paper to reflect some serious thought. (That alone might obviate any need, on your side, to worry about incorrect grammar or misspellings!)
Although you may refer to outside sources if you want to do so, please provide a reference, in the body of the essay, following your use of the outside source, to the source. There will be no grading premium for the use of outside sources—this only makes sense, given that the goal here is for you, and then for me, to discover what you think and feel, to discover what perplexes you, to discover what might even anger you on the essay assignment. This an effort for you to go “meta,” to grow in your own understanding of your own understanding of things religious—without feeling threatened over being “religiously incorrect,” too irreligious, or too (or not enough) anything.
Your paper should be typewritten, double-spaced, and should be no less than two pages long (thus somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 words). There is no grading premium for a longer paper, but you may make it as much longer as you desire—it might be that length will allow you to do a better job of exploring the subject.
You may turn in your paper to me in class, or you may email it to me at my personal email, doug.inhofe@gmail.com Either way, I must receive it no later than the due date.
B. Scheduling for this course’s second and third essay assignments
The second essay subject will be given you on Monday, March 12th. Your second essay will be due to me no later than Monday, April 2nd.
The third essay will be the essay on the meaning of life, a subject that we will talk about in class, in more depth than our last go-round on it, and the assignment for it will include some ideas about how you might structure your essay. In short, I will expect that you discuss two of the possibilities, including your thoughts on their weaknesses, their strengths, and which of them appeals to you more. (I assume you might pick your favorite of the six options as one of your two for discussion, but you need not.) Your third essay will be due no later than Monday, April 23rd.
