1.1 An Introduction to this Unit This unit deals with foundational concepts and factors relating to population health. We will examine issues determining social and environmental aspects of disease, health and wellbeing and explore contemporary issues impacting on states of health, including current day trends in communicable and non-communicable disease. 1.2 What is Expected of You This unit has a “flipped classroom” approach, which is recommended for best learning. This means that you study the content before your tutorial class. You can find the full listings in the Schedule of Activities but if you follow every activity on vUWS in the designated week you will always be prepared for your tutorial.
Onshore students
Class time totals 3 hours each week. This includes a 1 hour face-to-face lecture, a 1 hour face-to-face tutorial and, on most weeks, online activities taking approximately 1 hour in length. Thus, it is expected that you engage in unit learning and activities independently for (on average) a further 7 hours each week, outside of class time. This includes completing assigned readings for upcoming tutorials, revising for quizzes and the exam, and preparing for written assessments.
Online students
As for the onshore students, online students have a 1 hour e-tutorial each week. This might occur via zoom or on discussion boards. It is expected that you engage in unit learning and activities independently for (on average) a further 9 hours each week. Evidence suggests that online students need additional opportunities for discussion and engagement to feel as connected as campus students. You will use a combination of videos, readings, online activities and discussion board for you to prepare for these tutorial sessions, and to guide your preparation for assessments.
