The “Boston Model” is the nickname used to describe how a coalition that consisted of community service organizations, federal and state governments, religious leaders, educators, police, lawyers, clergy, doctors, nurses, and parents and the Boston Public School System became stakeholders to develop strategies to reduce youth violence and decrease the easy availability of guns (Prothrow-Stith & Spivak, 2004). The process that the community stakeholders used involved understanding risk and resiliency in order to accomplish feats such as, the public school system developing a violence prevention curriculum designed to address peer fighting in high schools. The risk factors identified consisted of poverty, alcohol, guns access, and the witnessing of violence whether at home, school, or within the community (Prothrow-Stith & Spivak, 2004). To confront these factors, leaders suggested prevention strategies proven to be effective at ceasefire prevention similar to Boston’s. The processes consisted of resiliency with mentors to help the youth at risk, building on success which gave children the opportunity to be and feel successful ultimately resulting in them continuing to be successful, and ensuring they had a nurturing environment.
