As presented in the case study, Emily is a newly graduated nurse working in a surgical ward. Due to having a busy and heavy workload, she was not able to complete her delegated tasks. According to hospital policy, her delegated task was to change every patients IVC’s 24 hourly, which she did not do because of her workload. However, in assignment 1, the answerable question developed was: “What factors contribute to the neglecting of nursing tasks and what strategies can be put in place to reduce staff workload”? The answerable question did not provide enough evidence in the first case study and due to this factor; a detailed research of the case study will be done and the answerable question will be developed around the borders focusing on workload and uncompleted tasks. Emily is trying to manage her workload by reorganising her patients needs which lead her to not following the stipulated policies and procedures of her organisation. The problem that seems to be a major concern is the workload as it can affect the performance of an individual(Emily) and can also endanger the patient’s healthcare outcome.
